You guys KNOW how Michigan springs can be, right? One minute you’re pulling out your favorite sunnies, the next you’re digging for that forgotten winter hat. Honestly, coming out of those long Michigan winters always feels like I’m a little bear stretching after a loooong nap. Groggy, craving all the golden hour sunshine, and itching to get back behind the camera (okay, maybe that last part is just my photographer heart!). Every March I’m texting my sister like, “something feels OFF,” and she’s always the voice of reason reminding me that a little Vitamin D will work wonders.
April sessions? They’re like this wild, untamed beast… you could get a snowstorm, you could get a downpour, who even knows?! Forget about guaranteed flower blooms, we’re usually ankle-deep in squishy mud. But honestly? The amazing humans who book April sessions are my kind of people. They’re the adventurers, the ones who’ve been dreaming of spring and are totally game to tromp through that crazy green grass just to chase a little sliver of sunlight.
And you know what? Those are the sessions that so often steal my heart. The messy, the real, the beautifully imperfect ones.
I drove to meet up with Jordan and Courtney at Kensington Metropark for their golden hour engagement photos but the whole way to the session I was praying for sun because the sky was so overcast and cloudy. However, right when we all arrived, the sun (which had been hiding all day) started to peek out from behind the clouds. We all looked at each other like “LOOK THE SUN” and took off into the field. That was when I just knew it was going to be one of those special days. Not only were Jordan and Courtney dressed like they walked right out of my couple’s style guide Pinterest page, but they were all smiles, down for anything, and completely lost in their own little world – that easy, heartfelt connection just made everything feel so effortless.
We wandered through the fresh grasses chasing those gorgeous pockets of sunlight. I was in my element feeling so elated to be back behind my camera and these two? They just embraced every single moment and prompt full stop.
No stiffness, no rushing, just pure, joyful connection. It was the kind of session where you just feel the love radiating between two people.
And then… the sky just exploded.
That golden hour light? It poured over the field as the sun started to dip below the horizon, and for a few minutes, it felt like the entire world just paused for Jordan and Courtney. They danced in the warm beams of light and I just sat in the field watching from behind my camera thinking “oh my gosh this is unreal”.
It was pure magic. The kind you can’t plan, the kind that gives you all the feels right down to your toes. ✨
Jordan and Courtney’s Brighton engagement session was everything I adore about photographing couples here in Michigan: a little bit unpredictable, a little bit wild, and absolutely, completely unforgettable. I’m already counting down the days until I get to celebrate even more of their story later this year!
