Most mornings, I am rocking Dorothy before the sun comes up… her hair all fuzzy from sleep, her body warm and heavy against mine—and every morning as the sun rises earlier and earlier, I think “this is the good stuff.” These quiet, early hours. The way the house feels before the day begins. The way the sun starts to com in through different windows at earlier hours as our part of the world gets closer to summer. The way my kids wake up with giant smiles ready for hugs, snuggles and playtime.
I used to think sunset sessions were the ultimate dream—glowy light, golden skies, all the magic… and don’t get me wrong, they are INCREDIBLE. But after multiple years of trying to get my own family’s photos done mid-summer at sunset (ie wayyyy too close to bedtime for anyone to be functional), I’m realizing that there might be a better option for families with little kids.
So this summer, I’m leaning into what actually works for mamas like us: morning photo sessions!
Running around in the soft light and cool air. Playing and embracing the full belly laughs and happy hearts of a new day… with plenty of energy and excitement for the things to come… these are the kind of mornings that allow your kids to be themselves. Peter and Kayla and their sweet boys came last week for an adventure session full of garden core aesthetics, and farm animal fun. What if a photo session with little kids doesn’t have to feel forced (or squeezed into the tricky but beautiful summer nights)? What if it can feel like a calm, beautiful summer morning?
